Francis
is an anomaly: an American artist whose work and public acceptance
were at least in the beginning as much Parisian as American;
a Northern California painter whose feel is if
local at all Southern Californian [airy, oceanic, pretty].
He is also considered the third member of a West Coast post-war triumvirate
of "major" artists, with Tobey and Diebenkorn.
