Gail Chadell Nanao, Adonis, 2001, 64 x 99 inches, Oil on Canvas |
Gail Chadell Nanao's new paintings manifest an eloquent and creative spirit. Her paintings such as "Berkeley Venus" and "Adonis" are suffused with a cool glow creating a somber mood reminiscent of Francisco Goya and Edvard Munch. The rich tonal color is achieved with brushwork that appears to be free and loose in application but still maintains precision in defining form. The surfaces of this work and others as "Venus with Kuniyoshi Eyes" have an intrinsic glow. Her works impart a feeling of beauty that is profound and remote and timeless. — Karl Kasten, Professor Emeritus, U.C. Berkeley |
