John Griefen is a painter and since the late sixties he has had solo exhibitions of his paintings in the United States, Canada and Australia. His paintings have been included in group exhibitions in museums and galleries here and abroad. His work is represented in public and private collections including: The Brooklyn Museum, Carnegie Institute, Ft. Lauderdale Museum, The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, The Metropolitan Museum of Art , The Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney Museum of American Art. He attended the Chicago Art Institute, Bennington College, Williams College (BA), and Hunter College. He taught at Bennington College in 1969 and has been teaching and lecturing since then. In 1994 he taught an open-air landscape painting class through New York University Continuing Education Center in Central Park, and he was a guest teacher at The Art Students League in 1995.
